Chapter 7: The Hunt Begins

Sixty hours after destroying the Regional Convergence Node, our expanded intelligence network confirmed what we’d feared—the Collective Mind had indeed promoted our existence up the chain of command.

Mike’s upgraded monitoring equipment detected massive energy signatures converging on our location from three different directions. The readings were unlike anything we’d seen before, suggesting we were about to face enemy units that operated on a completely different level.

“They’re not just sending more Synths,” Sarah said, studying the energy patterns. “These readings suggest… I don’t know what they suggest. The energy signatures are too complex.”

Frank had been coordinating with the three other survivor groups we’d managed to make contact with. Each group brought their own expertise and numbers to our alliance, but they also brought complications.

“We’ve got a total of forty-seven fighters across all groups,” Frank reported during our final strategy meeting. “But coordination is going to be a nightmare. Different groups have different priorities and fighting styles.”

Jessica had been working with the other groups’ mages, developing combined spells and tactics. “The good news is that we’ve got people who can handle system interference and energy warfare. The bad news is that none of them have encountered Void Walker abilities before.”

I studied the enemy approach patterns on Mike’s tactical display. Three massive energy signatures were converging on Grandview from different directions, but they weren’t moving directly toward us. They were establishing defensive positions first.

“They’re not planning to assault our base,” I realized. “They’re surrounding it.”

Mike confirmed this by running the numbers. “They’re establishing a containment perimeter. No one gets in, no one gets out. This isn’t an assault—it’s a siege.”

Jessica’s expression darkened. “They want to know how to make more Void Walkers. Or how to prevent anyone else from becoming one.”

The tactical display showed the enemy containment perimeter closing in. In six hours, Grandview would be completely surrounded. Our window for action was limited.

I studied the enemy movement patterns with Void Sight. “They’re not omniscient. There are gaps in their perimeter, especially between the three main units.”

Mike was already working on a plan. “I can create a temporary system disruption field that will blind their sensors. But it will only last for maybe thirty minutes.
